We are hunting heavy this weekend. Kicking things off with Dr. Joe Ables of Decatur, TX. For those of you who might not know- Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD) is the biggest threat to Texas whitetails. Killing tens of thousands of animals last year alone. Well Dr. Ables has invested his time and energy into studying this deer killer and he has successfully come up with a treatment! This is a groundbreaking development in whitetail medicine and will benefit both our native and pen raised deer populations. Dr. Ables with a nice buck post treatment.

Then we are talkin’ late season gobblers with renowned outdoor writer and Real Tree Turkey Editor Steve Hickoff. Steve has been chasing toms for decades and with only 3 weeks left in the season we pick his brain on how to bag that last minute gobbler! Calling, locations, and decoy setups are just a few of the things we discuss.

We round out the broadcast with some suppressor talk. TPWD recently passed some regulatory changes that will allow the use of suppressors when hunting wild game animals such as deer or turkey etc. There are quite a few benefits involved with this decision and Scott Bittner w/ Silenced America will educate us on exactly what all this means. Dang! What a great show we have planned for this weekend. Spring is here and if you aren’t chasing longbeards then you should be wetting a line somewhere. So we are keeping it fishing heavy this week and we kick it off with our Coastal Fishing Report when our longtime friend Captain Len Girard joins us live from Corpus Christi Bay! The trout are plentiful as are black drum and the redfish are starting to move back in. Captain Len with a monster bull red!

Then a real treat when Scooter Bivens of the History Channel’s hit show Mudcats stops by. Scooter has won numerous noodling championships including the Okie Noodling Invitational Championship as featured on Mudcats. Now that Texas has a legal noodling season I am sure Scooter can share some tips for those of us who are new to the sport! Scooter with a couple monstrous flatheads!

Then we round out the show when our longtime bud and Army Bass Anglers Founder and President – Major Cody Roberson drops in. The Major has some big news regarding the new Army Redfish Anglers division and of course the new show Force on Force which premiered on Sportsman’s Channel a couple weeks ago. It’s gonna be a good one!

Dang! We are all over the map this week- but I think that’s a good thing! Off the top we catch up with our longtime buddy, former Texas Ranger great and 3 time MLB All Star hurler Jim “The Amazing Emu” Kern. It’s no coincidence that now was the ideal time to chat with our old friend- being that our Rangers open up the 2012 season this weekend. But more importantly Jim has been a professional hunting and fishing guide since the mid 80s and we talk all things hunting and fishing with this larger than life character!

Then a real treat when Texas Fish and Game Magazine Executive Editor Chester Moore drops in. Chester has been fishing for flounder for over 20 years and has written bucks and countless articles on flounder. He is the authority on Texas flatfish and I am thrilled to pick his brain on how to find these tasty fish and more importantly- how to catch em!

Then we round out the show when Casey Keefer, co-host of Dropped Project Alaska stops by. Dropped just finished airing on Sportsman’s Channel and it was one hell of a ride as Casey and his brother Chris were dropped in Alaska’s Brookes mountain range and had to use their hunting skills to survive on their own for 30 days! Some of the best big game hunting footage you’ll ever see as the brothers harvested caribou and moose to stay alive!

Got another good one lined up for you guys and gals! We kick it off by talking reds and trout with our longtime friend of the show- Captain Len Girard. The warm weather means the action is heating up along the Texas Coast and Captain Len tells us where he is finding large groups of staging trout and what he’s catching them on.

Then, it’s the return visit of one of the outdoor industry’s most recognizable figures…Buck and Duck Commander Willie Robertson! The Duck Commander crew has a new show set to hit major network television next week and Willie tells us all about Duck Dynasty which airs on A&E- set those DVR’s for Wednesday nights at 9pm CST. Of course we also get will to tell us how this past season was for him. So of course we’ll talk ducks and deer as well.

Right now is one of my favorite times of the year as the South Zone turkey season opens this weekend and the North Zone follows suit on the 31st! Our Texas Parks and Wildlife Turkey Program Leader Jason Hardin is the authority on Texas Turkeys and I am thrilled to have him join us this week as well. Hunting strategy, hot spots around the state, public hunting opportunities and habitat management are just a few of the things we discuss.

We then round out the show by checking in with Warriors Roadtrip Network founder and president- Rusty Pease. The WRN is a great Texas based organization dedicated to taking service men and women, police officers, firefighters and special needs kids into the outdoors. I am thrilled to have Rusty on the show and even more excited to be a part of this great organization!

Anyone who has been following competitive bass fishing this fall knows that the Alabama Rig is responsible for winning just about every tournament out there. The umbrella style, multi lure rig has revolutionized the sport in a matter of months! So much so that BASS is considering banning the bait on the Elite Series and the upcoming Bass Master Classic. Then we get into some exotic talk with our old buddy Austin Dempsey of the Star S Ranch. You might recall the anti hunters have been trying to prevent exotic ranches from hunting 3 specific species: dama gazelle, scimitar horned oryx and the addax. These animals are endangered or extinct in their native africa- but exotic ranches have done an amazing job managing breeding herds of these animals in the states. The big loser with the latest news is the animlas themselves. Austin breaks it all down for us. The addax- what an awesome animal!

We round out the broadcast by tackling the zebra mussel issue with Texas Parks and Wildlife’s Inland Fisheries Regional Director Brian Van Zee. Zebra mussels are a highly invasive european species that once established in a lake or river system can cause extreme environmental and economic problems. Sadly enough- zebra mussels already have an established population on Lake Texoma. As anglers and boaters we must take every precaution to prevent their spread to other Texas waterways! Lots of great content this week folks! We start things off by checking in with Denton County Game Warden Darren Blackerby. I contacted GW Blackerby after a discouraging morning in the duck marsh…the hunt was great- but unfortunately some of the home owners around this Amry Corps Of Engineers lake didn’t appreciate the fact that we were hunting. So much so that they called the cops who came out and tried to get us to stop hunting even though we were more than double the legal distance from any house, roadway or school. We were so far away in fact, that we couldn’t hear the police honking at us or yelling at us thru a megaphone! Unfortunately, this type of unacceptable and ignorant behavior is becoming more and more common. BUT- we have rights as hunters and if you purchased your Type II permit and obey game laws then there is nothing folks can do to prevent you from hunting. If they do, they could go to jail. Here was the result of that morning- pretty good hunt with our buddy Zane Williams.

Then we put a stamp on the 2011 Texas Whitetail when TPWD Whitetail Deer Program Leader Alan Cain drops in. Alan has his finger squarely on the pulse of our whitetail herd and we get his thoughts on the season that was. How much did the drought really affect antler growth across the board? We also touch on the Managed Lands Deer Permit Program (MLD). This program has been one of the more successful in recent memory and it allows land owners and ranches extra tags and extended seasons to properly manage their deer. Doe harvest is a major part of the program. Also, Alan has some exciting new regarding archery seasons being opened up in Dallas, Collin and Rockwall counties!

We then round out the show when National Wild Turkey Federation- Texas Regional Directer Ray Hood stops by. The NWTF is one of my favorite conservation organizations. Ray has some breaking news to share regarding a new position opening up in the Lone Star State. I know I can’t wait for March to get here!

We kick off the New Years Day edition by checking in with Texas Parks and Wildlife Executive Director Carter Smith. Our state park system needs our help and has issued a 4.9 million dollar plea for help. With budget cuts and the extreme drought of 2011, the state park system simply didn’t generate enough revenue. TPWD has come up with a 3 fold plan of action and Carter jumps on to talk about how we can help get this thing back on track.

Then we check in with Andrew Watson of Highland Village. Last week, Andrew landed the first Toyota Sharelunker of the 2011-2012 season while crappie fishing with his dad. The 13.51 lb Lake Fork monster was picked up by Dave Campbell and taken back to the Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens. Andrew actually hooked this largemouth 3 times before getting her in the boat. He tells us all about her breaking him off multiple times before he landed the fish of a lifetime!

Then we are joined by Dallas Safari Club President Ben Carter. Out of the Wild is the weekend at the Dallas Convention Center. DSC convention week is always one of my favorite weeks of the year! Over 800 outfitters, guides, guns and optics makers from all over the globe will converge in Texas this Thursday-Sunday for the world’s premiere outdoor convention. Ben talks about the week’s festivities including some new things for this year’s convention.

Then, with my South Texas deer hunt only one week away- I figured we should talk to someone who hunts the Brush Country on a regular basis. And our old buddy and Elite Series Pro Kelly Jordon fits the bill perfectly! Kelly has been hunting Webb Country for over a decade and that happens to be the same county I will be hunting in. Kelly sheds some light on how hunting the Brush Country is different from hunting other regions of our state. I hope I am fortunate to take a nice management buck- which in South Texas could be something similiar to this 7 1/2 year 137 inch 8 pt KJ harvested last season! LOL. Only in South Texas can this be considered a cull buck- what a monster!

This week we have some great new stuff and also a few classics as we reflect on some of the shows best moments of 2011. Off the top though we were joined by deer hunter Richard Lomas of West Salem, Illinois. Two weeks ago, Richard was on the way to his blind for the 2nd part of the Illinois shotgun season when he stumbled across the deer of a lifetime. His 30 pt no fence buck was actually an antlered doe! He gives us all the details about that day and a hunt he will never forget.

Then a real treat when we replay the finest moments from our latest interview with Phil ‘The Duck Commander’ Roberson. We get this old timer’s thoughts on everything from lead vs steel shot to the birth of his children. Good stuff as always with the Duck Commander.

Next we rediscover some of the magic that Uncle Ted Nugent brings everytime he joins the show. You never know what he is going to say- but I guarantee you it will be opinionated and from the heart! Then a real treat for all you football fans out there as Dallas Cowboy’s safety Gerald Sensabaugh drops in. The 2-2 Cowboys are on a bye this week and I guarantee ya that means Gerald is on the water somewhere enjoying his other passion in life. We talk a little football and a whole lotta fishing. Then a very special treat when the beautiful Diamond Poole joins us. Diamond is a successful swimsuit, lingerie and fitness model who also plays full tackle football for the Dallas Diamonds. But there is a whole lot more to her story…up until about a year ago, Diamond was a lifelong PETA supporter, even donating part of her earnings each month to their effort!!! She thought all of us hunters were just a bunch ignorant rednecks anxious to kill the first thing that walked by. Luckily, she fell for a nice southern gentlemen who eventually showed her the light about what hunting truly is. You won’t want to miss her fascinating story as Diamond now has a whole mess of kills under her belt – including this trophy aoudad from this summer.

Wow! So much is going on in our great state right now. Sadly not all of it is good as much of our historic Bastrop State Park has been ravaged by the latest wildfires to scorch the Texas ground. Bastrop State Park was set up as part of FDR’s New Deal as the country tried to rebound from the Great Depression. Anyway, Texas Parks and Wildlife Spokesman Mike Cox drops in to talk about the fire and how it has affected the park and the famous “Lost Pines” forest. Then a very special treat as one of Texas best singer/songwriters joins us in studio. Owen Temple grew up in the Hill Country and deer hunting and pickin’ on an old guitar where just a way of life. Owen plays a couple tunes and talks about his love for the outdoors.

We round out the show by checking in with shark angler Albert Zertouche. On August 13th of this past summer Albert hooked up with a 12 ft 6 inch tiger shark off of North Padre’s Bob Hall Pier. This fish already shattered the Texas catch and release record and is a pending world record! Albert talks shark angling and tells the tale about his once in a lifetime catch!

With early teal season arriving this weekend I figured we better talk some ducks. And few folks out there know ducks like Duck Commader Jase Roberson. We talk early teal, water moccasins, what it was like growing up with a father like Phil and a whole lot more. As with all the Duckmen, Jase is a riot and will no doubt be a good listen!

Then we visit with Cooperstown legend Fergie Jenkins. The former Cy Young winner still holds the single season mark for wins by a Ranger pitcher with 25!!! But more importantly Fergie is a lifelong outdoorsman who will not only talk about the good ol days of Major League Baseball- specifically how could Fergie throw a whopping 30 complete games in 1971 while today’s starters rarely make it to the 8th inning. Notorious for hauling his bass boat to spring training and taking off right after practice, Fergie also also talks about a couple hunts he has planned this fall including bow hunting Illinois and elk hunting in Idaho. He even used to raise hunting dogs. Should be a good un!

We did get to enjoy an awesome North Texas sunset. Zane said that he really needs to get out in the field more often as it seems like it would be easy to draw inspiration to write songs from being in the great outdoors.

John’s latest piece “Golden Age of State Parks, How Texas Acquired a Passel of Iconic Parklands” graced the cover of the August edition of TPWD Magazine. The Lone Star State has over 600,000 acres of state park land. But it was the effort and vision of a few conservationists who helped pave the way for our great state park system. The 25 year Golden Age from 1963 to 1988 saw over sixty state parks added to the system. You may recognize names like Governor John Connally, Texas Tech’s John Gosdin and Senator Don Kennard. John talks about the article and reflects on some of those who paved the way for the state park system that hundreds of thousands of Texas hunters, hikers, campers and anglers enjoy each year.

ABA prostaff members have been cashing checks and spreading the Support, Defend, Fish mission statement and Major Roberson talks about some of the recent highlights. Also, born in raised in South, Texas – Major has been slaying hawgs since he was a kid. What’s his favorite way to catch big Texas bass during the heat of August? We are gonna find out.

Then one of my favorite musicians makes his return to the show, Brandon Rhyder has been a busy man. Having just released his Live At BillyBob’s record- he still found time to head to the coast and catch some trout this summer. Brandon talks about that experience as well as his recent bow elk hunting trip to Colorado.

Then we round out the show with someone many of ya’ll probably aren’t familiar with- heck I didn’t know much about him and I am a huge soccer fan. But after reading about him in the latest edition of Texas Monthly, I knew he was a kindred spirit and I had to get him on the show. Brad Davis of the Houston Dynamo is a huge bass angler and is equally passionate about deer and ducks! Not only that but he also has a foundation benefitting those brave men and women who have served our country. Not too shabby for a fella who is currently tied with David Beckham for the MLS lead in assists.

So whether you live in DFW, San Antonio or Houston the opportunities are all around you. Ultralight tackle, a kayak and a couple hours is all ya need for your next urban fishing adventure.

The breeder deer were euthanized due to the ranch’s failure to comply with state regulations and Lacey Act violations. The origin of the deer were not documented and therefore TPWD had no choice but to protect one of our state’s finest resources: our deer herd.

We round out the broadcast by checking in with Falcon Lake fishing guide Tommy Law. On January 7th, Tommy hauled in a 15.63 lb largemouth bass which shatterd the 20 year old Falcon Lake record of 15.12 lbs. Tommy has been fishing Falcon for 40 years and guiding for the past 3. Glad to see his hard work finally payed off with the fish of a lifetime, what a beauty!

And what is the best prank he played on his ‘ol buddy Bill Dance? All that and a whole lot more with one of the greatest anglers to ever wet a line.

Then we really shift the party into high gear when Eric Beatty of the Eric Beatty Band joins us in studio. You probably have heard the band’s hit single “Expect Too Much” which has been spinning on the Range’s airwaves over the past few months. Eric is as country as they make ‘em and enjoys jiggin’ for crappie and running trot lines for yellow and blue cats! Then we visit with Houston native Carl Riley who in October landed the fish of a lifetime when he landed this 800 lb blue marlin during the Bisbee Black and Blue Marlin Tournament in Los Cabos, Mexico. Anyway, after a 5 hour fight the fish was finally aboard but Carl and Team Great Escape were 10 minutes late getting to port for the weigh in. It ended up costing Team Great Escape anywhere from $650,000 to 1.2 million in prize money!!! So while that is a heartbreaker, Carl still ended up catching the fish of a lifetime. Carl talks about the fight and the experience of arriving just late to weigh in.

Then we go urban on ya with Texas Parks and Wildlife Urban Deer Biologist Richard Heilbrun. Many Midwestern states already have urban whitetail archery seasons and you may be suprised to know that Richard and TPWD want to see these kinds of programs implemented in Texas communities with large urban whitetail populations. Property destruction and deer/automobile collisions are on the rise across the board and urban archery is a viable option to help control these deer herds…very interesting stuff!

When people think of bass fishing in Texas, one lake stands above the rest. Yep I am talking about Lake Fork here ya’ll. Other lakes (like O.H. Ivie last season) have enjoyed tempory success over the years. But none have stood the test of time like Fork. So this morning we’ll talk with my buddy and longtime Lake Fork Guide Heath Hardwick. Heath has been fishing Fork for 15 year and he will explain the biological reasons why Fork continually produces so many big fish. The stats don’t lie- Fork has produced 246 of the 504 registered sharelunkers caught in Texas! That is just under 50% !!! Heath also has the fish patterned to a science so you just may learn something if you are interested in fishing Lake Fork.

With the bow season opener only a couple weeks away, I thought we should probably talk with the president of an organization that is always working to protect our rights as Texas bowhunters. So I am thrilled that Lone Star Bowhunters Association President Jack Jetton will join the program. The LSBA has been protecting and advocating for our rights since the 1970′s. Who do ya think got us our archery only season? Yep it was the LSBA. With over 30 years of bowhunting experience we can learn a lot from Jack. He even serves on the Whitetail Advisory Council to TPWD. Needless to say I am thrilled to have Jack as a guest.

Hunters and outdoorsmen are always looking for ways to better hide themselves for their prey. So obviously camoflauge is very important to us and their are literally hundreds of brands and patterns to choose from out there. But only one was designed specifically for Texas hunters by a Texas hunter. Game Guard is entering their 9th hunting season and has gained a pretty loyal following. But how did this Texas based and family owned business get going? Game Guard’s founder/owner Craig Smith drops in to talk about why he formed this great company. What kind of obstacles did he face starting out in the cut throat camoflauge industry? We get to the bottom of all that and what seperates Game Guard from other camo patterns. I am proud to wear it when I am in the field.

Hundreds of participating game processors throughout the state that will process deer for a discounted rate (which the hunter can then use as a tax write off), and then donate the meat to the Hunters for the Hungry program.

Then we’ll visit with Gordon Melton. Gordon founded an organization that I am a big fan of- Hunting With Soldiers. Gordon’s vision was to take returning veterans from Afghanistan and Iraq on hunts at his place in Paducah, TX. A veteran himself, Gordon realized that these soldiers needed a sanctuary that no amount of prescription medication could provide, and that is why Hunting With Soldiers was formed. It’s a small token of appreciation for those who have been willing to pay the ultimate sacrifice. I am pumped to visit with Gordon about every aspect of Hunting With Soldiers.

Here is Gordon with the first Veteran that went hunting last year. The soldier was even presented with a handcrafted knife made by Godley, TX native Tony Prater Sr.

Lastly, we will talk with Will Scott of the Star-S-Ranch. Will has been managing his Hill Country whitetail herd for 15 years now and has a lot of experience and information to share with those of us who own land or have a lease. While the Star-S-Ranch is a big time hunting ranch, philosophies on growing big deer and maintaining a healthy herd are very similiar to what can do on your own place. Will is an expert on whitetails and is also a big time hunter and conservationist. I have been to the ranch and seen the deer firsthand. Pretty impressive!

With the Texas Dove Season right around the corner ( we are less than a month away from the North Zone opener ya’ll !), I thought it would be beneficial to visit with TPWD’s Dove Program Leader Corey Mason. How many dove hunters are there in the Lone Star State? How many dove are harvested annually and what percentage of those are resident vs migratory birds. How many whitewings do we harvest each season? What about the invasive Eurasian Collared Dove? We even dive into the state’s dove banding program. You don’t want to miss this interview!

Then we sit down with one of the most diverse musicians on the planet. His country roots are undeniable but he fronts a hard core rock band and dabbles in rockabilly as well. You may know him as the grandson of Hank, son of Hank Jr- but we affectionately just refer to him as Hank 3. He also has a new record out- Rebel Within - and is about to go on an extensive tour.

In addition to all that, Hank 3 is also an avid outdoorsman. He talks about growing up hunting with his dad and Waylon Jennings. Pawn Stars averages 6 million viewers on Monday nights- and I am sure that we will be entertained by this star of stars.

We will also visit with 16 year old Wesley Brown of Canyon Lake, TX. Wesley joined his father on an Alaskan black bear hunt this summer and we find out how a B&C All Time Record came to be harvested.
